THE ROLE OF COMMUNITY BUSINESS FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT IN MONGOLIA

Abstract

Since 1990, Mongolia has been shifting well the transition from a centrally planned economy to a market economy. It has made good progress in undertaking fundamental economic reforms and caused rapid economic growth. However, at the same time it results in several challenges such as urban-rural disparities, income polarization, social disintegration, and environmental problem. It creates weakening the potential for sustainability in Mongolia.

Along with the increasing efforts to establish sustainable development, the issues of community business have attracted considerable attention in the last few decades. The establishment of community business is triggered by the unsuccessful government-only top down policy, and the imbalance development of nation. Community business has been increasingly acknowledged as a way to maintain autonomy of rural and indigenous communities and argued as a potential solution for poverty reduction. If such a successful community business model can be implemented in a wider range, then it will become an answer for attempts towards balanced and sustainable development in Mongolia.

The intent of this paper is to introduce concept of community business and investigate in patterns that lead to successful formation and operation in Mongolia situation. Accordingly it provides insights of the role of community business for sustainable development in Mongolia.
